A field guide to the ravaged world.
Short, checked answers for your first hours in Mortal Shell II: how leveling and Gloom actually work, where the Chapel Key hides, and which Shell to wear. Everything here names its source — and says so when a claim is still unverified.
“Their Flesh Is Your Weapon. Possess warrior Shells, dethrone false gods, redeem a ravaged world.”

Finish the prologue without hoarding
The prologue Beacon only lets you rest — it cannot level you up. Play through and don't worry about spending anything yet.

-
Pick up your first Shell
Tiel the Acolyte is usually the first Shell players find, in the graveyard area near Widow's Overlook. Compare all 8 Shells.
-
Get the Chapel Key at Mushroom Village
A short illusion puzzle at the witches' bonfire earns the key to the Shrine of Trials — and an Axe & Dagger. The full route.

Quick answers
Is this the official Mortal Shell II site?
No. This is an unofficial, fan-made guide. The official game site is mortalshell.com, developed by Cold Symmetry and published by Playstack.
Is the game out, and on what platforms?
Yes — released August 20, 2026 on Steam (PC), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
How many Shells can you play?
Eight playable Shells, per Steam and the Devout Edition description. Harros the Vassal is used in the prologue only and is lost afterward, which is why some early articles said “nine.” Full comparison.
Do I need the first Mortal Shell to follow the story?
The official description calls it a standalone sequel. Several character names (Harros, Eredrim, Tiel, Genessa) return from the first game, so names can feel familiar — the story stands on its own.
