All 8 Shells, side by side
There are 8 playable Shells — the official Steam and Devout Edition wording. Harros the Vassal is a ninth Shell used only in the prologue and lost afterward, which is why some pre-release articles said “nine.” Collecting all 8 earns the Shell Seeker trophy; Harros doesn't count toward it.
The comparison table
Acquisition stages are cross-checked between media guides. We don't print skill-tree percentages or a tier list — the public numbers contain known errors and need in-game verification first.
| Shell | Counts in 8 | Where / when found | Plays like |
|---|---|---|---|
| Harros the Vassalreturning name from Mortal Shell | No — prologue only | Prologue; lost when it ends | Tutorial Shell; petrify-style ability. Whether it can ever be recovered is unconfirmed. |
| Tiel the Acolyte | Yes | Early — graveyard southeast of Widow's Overlook, outside Mushroom Village | Stealth, dodges, Shadow Strike. Usually the first Shell you can get. |
| Proxima the Broodseeker | Yes | Early — Shattered Beacon, northeast Blackridge | Grapple and lightning; defensive, good at earning resources. Biosampler and Grafted Armor kit. |
| Eredrim the Venerablereturning name | Yes | Early-mid — Citadel of Penance, after fighting the Warden | Tank; posture-break, executions, Shoulder Bash. |
| Gragu the Insatiable | Yes | Mushroom Village direction — One-Legged Wolf Tavern, hand over the Heart of Vatra | Charged heavy hits; heals through hearts instead of the usual method. |
| Smert the Apostate | Yes | West of the Outskirts of Nochte — blood-offering ritual | Spends health to slow time / Chaos effects. Make the offering while wearing a Shell — doing it as the bare Harbinger is lethal. |
| Lazlo the Justiciarwiki spelling: Lazlo | Yes | Late — Mammon, the Crypts, after defeating Lord Vellen | Highest health and damage reduction; overheat shockwave. |
| Sariel the Endless | Yes | Chamber of Becoming — requires defeating Sariel | Curses and a Pain meter. Smash the stone tablets to stop the resurrection. |
| Genessa the Waywardreturning name | Yes | Revenant Graves — defeat Sester Secundus, return the Censer to Marrow Keep | Summons a double. Can't be marked on the map; may need to be equipped at her own arena. |
Harros, Eredrim, Tiel, and Genessa all appeared in the first Mortal Shell. This is a standalone sequel — same names, independent story. Don't assume first-game lore carries over.
Which one first?
Most players end up with Tiel simply because it's on the early route, and Proxima shortly after. Both are solid openers: Tiel if you like dodging, Proxima if you'd rather absorb hits while learning bosses. We won't rank the rest — playstyle differences matter more than any tier letter, and the public stat numbers aren't reliable yet.
Quick answers
So is it 8 Shells or 9?
8 playable. The “9” figure counts Harros, who is prologue-only. Official wording (Steam, Devout Edition) says eight.
Can I get Harros back after the prologue?
Unconfirmed. Guides agree he's lost when the prologue ends; no verified method to recover him has surfaced.
Do Shells level up with Gloom?
No — Shell ability trees use Glimpse. Gloom levels the Harbinger. How the currencies split.
