What to Do First in Mortal Shell 2
Last verified: 2026-08-24
Quick answer
Finish the prologue without hoarding. Unlock leveling at Marrow Keep. Pick up Tiel near Widow’s Overlook. Get the Chapel Key in Mushroom Village when you want the Axe & Dagger. Spend Gloom before a risky fight — a second death deletes the previous pile.
Opening hours, in order
- Prologue. The first Beacon cannot level you. Play through and kill the Tar Golem if you want the missable “No, You Still Can’t Win” achievement on this save.
- Marrow Keep. Deliver the Ova. The central Beacon unlocks Harbinger upgrades paid with Gloom.
- First Shell. Tiel sits southeast of Widow’s Overlook. Proxima is the usual second pickup at Shattered Beacon.
- Chapel Key. Optional early, but it is the cleanest path to a second melee weapon. Full route.

Rules that punish new players
- Death drops Gloom. Only the latest corpse keeps it.
- After Balance Patch 1, buying a Shell’s map mark costs Gloom, not Glimpse.
- There are 49 Beacons; 46 can be cleansed. Marrow Keep, Widow’s Overlook, and Outskirts of Mammon start already clean.
Quick answers
Do I need the first Mortal Shell?
Official copy calls this a standalone sequel. Familiar names return; the story does not require the first game.
How many Shells should I chase in the first session?
Tiel is enough. The other seven have later or gated landmarks.
